Who it's for

French for your immigration file.

This program is for adults who need a TEF Canada or TCF Canada result for their application, including:

Not sure where you stand? Our TEF Canada and TCF Canada prep guide explains the tests, and French for Express Entry covers the points.

The target

What NCLC 7 actually means.

IRCC converts TEF Canada and TCF Canada results to the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC). For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, your first official language needs to be at least NCLC 7 in all four skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing.

On TCF Canada, the speaking and writing papers are each marked out of 20. To reach NCLC 7, you need at least 10/20 on each, plus at least 458 in listening and 453 in reading. For TEF Canada, IRCC uses the "équivalence ancien score" column on your results, not the "score / 699" column. One strong skill can't make up for a weak one, so we build your classes around the skill that's furthest from your target.

The two tests

TEF Canada and TCF Canada at a glance.

IRCC accepts both for Express Entry. They're run by different organizations and have different formats.

TCF Canada

Run by France Éducation international (FEI). Four required tests, 2 h 47 in total.

  • Listening: 39 multiple-choice questions, 35 minutes
  • Reading: 39 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes
  • Writing: 3 tasks in 60 minutes, marked out of 20
  • Speaking: 3 tasks in 12 minutes, face to face with an examiner (a guided interview, an exchange to get information, and your point of view), marked out of 20

Sources: FEI, Manuel du candidat au TCF, version Q (September 2026), checked Oct 21, 2026; France Éducation international, TCF Canada (the FEI site blocks automated checks).

TEF Canada

Run by the CCI Paris Île-de-France (Le français des affaires). Four required tests. For an immigration application they are taken on the same day. Reading, listening and writing are on a computer. Speaking is face to face with the test centre's examiner, and that section is recorded.

  • Reading: 40 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes
  • Listening: 40 multiple-choice questions, 40 minutes. Each recording plays once.
  • Writing: two sections in 60 minutes. Section A is 25 minutes: continue an article, at least 80 words. Section B is 35 minutes: give a point of view and justify it, at least 200 words.
  • Speaking: two sections in 15 minutes. Section A is 5 minutes: ask for information. Section B is 10 minutes: make an argument.

How classes work

Exam practice, with real feedback.

Classes are online over video call, one-on-one or in a group of up to three. A typical class includes:

Your first 30 minutes are free. It's a short speaking check: one timed task, then your strengths, your top two fixes and an indicative level. It's not an official score. After the call, your tutor sends you a one-page feedback sheet. See a blank sample of the feedback sheet (PDF).

Pricing

What it costs.

For example, two one-on-one classes a week at $30 is $60 a week.

FAQ

TEF and TCF Canada questions, answered.

Should I take TEF Canada or TCF Canada?

IRCC accepts both TEF Canada and TCF Canada as proof of French for Express Entry. Check which tests your program accepts, then compare test dates and centres near you. We don't recommend one test over the other, but in your free class we can walk you through both formats so you know what to expect.

What score do I need for Express Entry?

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, your first official language needs to be at least NCLC 7 in all four skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Other programs use different levels. Requirements change, so always check the current rules on Canada.ca.

What does NCLC 7 mean on TCF Canada?

IRCC converts TCF Canada results to NCLC. For NCLC 7, you need at least 10 out of 20 on the speaking paper and at least 10 out of 20 on the writing paper, plus at least 458 in listening and 453 in reading. Each skill has to reach the minimum on its own, so we plan your classes around your weakest skill.

How long are my results valid?

IRCC says your test results must be less than 2 years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you apply for permanent residence.

How long will my preparation take?

It depends on your starting level and how often you practise. In your free 30-minute class, a tutor listens to you speak, looks at where you are, and suggests a realistic plan. We don't promise a score or a timeline before we've met you.

Is the free speaking check an official score?

No. The tutor gives you an indicative level and your top two things to fix. Only TEF Canada and TCF Canada results count for IRCC.

How much does TEF and TCF Canada prep cost?

One-on-one classes are $35 an hour, or $30 an hour each when you take more than one one-on-one class a week. Small groups of up to three learners are $25 per student per hour. Your first 30-minute class is free.

When are classes?

Classes run Monday to Friday from 4pm to 9pm, and anytime on weekends, Eastern time. If you're in Western Canada, our tutors do their best to find a time that works in your time zone.
